Applied Researchers – Software Development Technologies and Methods

Position Description


The Fraunhofer USA, Inc., Center for Experimental Software Engineering (CESE) ( is seeking applied researchers to work in the area of advanced software development technologies and methods. Our customers range from local startups to Fortune 500 companies who rely on our software and systems engineering skills to digitally transform their businesses.

Software development research work at CESE involves understanding, using and expanding on modern software technologies such as software architecture, model-driven methods, cloud services, and mobile app development, as well as agile software development methods and tools such as DevOps, Scrum, Jenkins, SonarQube etc. The research involves architecture/design research, creating architectures/designs for new systems using modern technologies, improving architectures/designs of existing systems and providing architecture/design guidance and support internally as well as externally.

The responsibilities of the position include:

* Use your systems analysis expertise to help our customers (IARPA, DARPA, NASA, University of Maryland, medical device manufacturers, and other large industrial companies) solve their software engineering and architecture problems

  • Contribute to developing Fraunhofer's cutting edge architecture/design tools, skills and offerings
  • Manage agile development teams and provide software design and architecture guidance
  • Work with Fraunhofer staff to do business development, develop project proposals and acquire project funding in areas related to software and systems engineering
  • Publish papers and articles in research and professional venues related to software engineering using modern software technologies and methods


  • Minimum 3 years of software development experience or equivalent knowledge
  • Minimum 1 year of project management experience, preferably in agile environments, or equivalent knowledge
  • Great working knowledge of modern software technologies and methods
  • Good working knowledge of agile development tools such as Jenkins, Jira, Nextflow
  • Good working knowledge of common programming languages
  • Background in life sciences, biological computing or related field is a plus
  • US citizen or permanent resident status preferred for some US government contracts
  • PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering or closely related field is preferred

A successful candidate must also exhibit strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills and ability to work independently as well as with a team. Excellent spoken and written communication skills are essential, as is a willingness and ability to take initiative. Experience in working with agencies of the US Federal Government is desirable, as is visibility in the international research community.
